Day 64: Halloween Part 3

Our apartment was trashed this morning after a gnarly Friday night of Halloween celebrations. It started to rain, forcing every out of towner to seek shelter causing a massive inconvenience for all IV locals. We had two randos come into our house, eat our food, and throw up in our sinks.

Random peacock feathers? Really?

There is a blue mystery substance on our door and Brian's bed. We still haven't figured out what it is but are guessing its Windex.

Day 63: Halloween Day 2

While I did not post this until Day 64, this picture was taken the day before. With all the chaos I couldn't post it until now. This is Brian and I as Chilean Miners and Gio as Turd Fergusen. His hat is funny because its bigger than a normal hat. Gio ended up throwing up in it before the night was over. He filled all 50 gallons of it.

Day 62: Halloween Day 1

I haven't taken a picture of the day during the day in quite a while so here is one. Today marks the first day of 4 Halloween nights in Isla Vista. I took this picture to contrast what it will look like on Nov. 1st. so here is the before...

Day 59: Warning Notice

We got a "Warning notice" today for having bottles in our gutter. Apparently they could damage the roof.

So we have to abort the bottle gutter mission. Here was our progress.

Day 58: A Modern Inconvenience

I have a midterm on Tuesday and am very far behind to say the least. As I was catching up on the reading online, I came across this article. Unfortunately for me (and everyone else that didn't buy the reader) this article was loaded horizontally and was a bitch to read. I realized after taking the picture that while it was greatly convenient to have the article posted on the internet it was out shadowed by the minor inconvenience of its orientation.

Using my newly acquired college brain skills, I turned my laptop into an Ipad. Its kind of funny how much it looks like a book.

Day 57: Malkovich & Buscemi

I just thought this was a cool spread.

Day 56: Poppin' Pollock's Cherry with Tom Pollock

You don't get much more respect than Tom Pollock. In a class that I T.A. (Film and Media 54: Hollywood Industry) we have guests come every week and talk about their career in the entertainment industry. Tonight's guest was Tom Pollock. The funny thing is we had the class in the new Pollock Theatre that just got finished (he "donated" it) and we were officially the first class ever in the theatre.

Tom Pollock was the Chairman for MCA/Universal. For all you non-film people out there, thats a pretty fucking big deal. He made over 200 feature films that grossed over a total of $10 Billion Dollars including Jurassic Park (the highest grossing film of all time at that moment) and Schindler's List (which won a shit ton of Academy Awards including Best Picture). I actually worked at his production company, The Montecito Picture Company, last summer and had the opportunity to personally thank him tonight for that experience (I was the only student he called on motha fuckas!)

I would have taken my camera into the class but we aren't aloud to film anything and I still don't have a camera, only the one built into my camcorder, so heres a shitty phone picture.

This guy got to work with MARTIN SCORSESE, Ron Howard, Ivan Reitman, Brian Grazer, Steven Spielberg, Spike Lee, and James Cameron.

Here is a list of some of my personal favorite movies that he helped get made...

Up in the Air
Trailer Park Boys: The Movie
Juno
Old School
Thank You For Smoking
Jurassic Park
Cape Fear
Twins
The Flintstones
Back To the Future 2 & 3
Waterworld
Backdraft
Beethoven
Do The Right Thing
Field of Dreams
Born on the Fourth of uly
Scent of a Woman
Apollo 13
Babe

He had the fucking opportunity to turn down Pulp Fiction. Now thats how you know your a fuckin' boss.

Day 55: Miniature UCSB

Tonight I went to the library to work on a film paper for Film and Media Studies 96: Why Felando is the most hated and horrible person in the film department. Since her grading is already fixed before the class even starts, I knew there would be no way to get a good grade on the paper so I have pretty much given up completely.

To distract myself, I walked around the library and came across this little miniautre of the UCSB campus.

The amount of detail put into this thing is pretty amazing considering they got it right down to the last tree.

Here is the epicenter of our campus: Storke Tower. It stands about 3 inches tall on this model which is funny considering its the tallest structure at UCSB.

Helicopter shot!

Day 54: South Park Takes on Inception

If I were ever to become a history teacher, I would use South Park relentlessly in my class to show students important current events and people's divided opinions on them. It is great how they tackle both sides of an issue and then, in the end, make everyone feel retarded for making a big deal of it.

Tonight they took on Inception and in true South Park style, they nailed it. One of the better jabs tonight said by Stan's Mom, Sharon, was, "Just because something is really complex doesn't make it cool." The ending of the episode was similar to the film in that one asks oneself, "but what if you being in Mr. Mackey's dream was your cure?" followed by the psychiatrist humming Zack Hemsey's Inception theme.

All I have to say is that in the end, Inception and South Park are fucking awesome and Leo was in a dream the whole time, but you'll have to ask me in person for the proof. I'd get carpal tunnel from writing it.

Day 53: Hard Rain

I was watching the tele earlier today when monstrous roars of thunder flooded over Isla Vista. What soon followed was a massive down pour of heavy, thick rain that's intensity hadn't been matched in a while. Lately IV has been extremely bipolar in its day to day weather. One moment its good ole Cali sunshine and the next its hurricane Katrina. Got some cool slow mo shots.

Day 52: Microfilm

We are truly blessed to have the internet nowadays. For an assignment I have for my History of Silent Film class, we have to find a primary source for our research topic. This means we have to go through hours and hours of microfilm until we stumble upon something that is mildly relevant to our paper. The first step is going through drawers and drawers of 35mm microfilm. There are some documents here that are as old as the 1700's but I was looking for material between 1887 and 1927. Here is just "The Moving Picture World" drawer from 1902-1935.

Then you have to go to this old school machine that I've only seen once before in Silence of the Lambs and flip through literally days of newspaper articles, magazines, and everything else that was in print in 1902. It was fun seeing historical stuff like how Roosevelt became president after McKinley got assassinated but the whole time I kept thinking about using "ctrl F".

I have a new found respect for our parents who had to do this shit all motha fuckin day. At least I'll have a legit paper by the end of the quarter: The Creation and Evolution of Special Effects in the Early Cinema.

Day 51: Jackass 3D

It is great to see a movie that was made for $20 million and that no one thought would be a hit, be a hit. I was laughing hysterically throughout the entire film and especially liked all the slow motion shots of people getting kicked in the face and dildos flying through the air. The finale stunt was a little disappointing compared to previous ones but I'm glad it broke $50 mill opening weekend.

Day 50: Langner Management

RIP our bathroom door. Langner, in his inebriated state, decided that it would be a good idea to do some remodeling to the most private of all rooms. It started with a small dent but quickly escalated to smashing through it with head buts (courtesy of Doug and Rotan).

I am interested in seeing how long this shit will stay here and how our new door will affect our bathroom habits.

Thankfully this door is a piece of shit and made up mostly of cardboard so it shouldn't be too expensive to replace.

Day 49: Pigmy Studies

The best type of graffiti is the kind that makes a statement about something stupid. In Girvetz hall at the top of the stairs there is a door that is incredibly small. Almost Alice in Wonderland status. Anyway some guy tagged "Pigmy Studies" on it and it has seriously been there for years. Glad to see the janitors have a sense of humor.

Day 48: Brooklyn Learns to Surf

Today my friend Brandon came up for the weekend and he brought my surfboard for me. This is the first surfboard I have ever ridden/owned so it was nice to see it. A couple years ago I put a whole in the bottom of it and haven't used it in fear of making it worse. But I've decided I am going to ride it frequently because its better than not riding it at all.

Getting Brooklyn to pose on it was a fucking mission. She was horrified of it and I pretty much had to yell at her to sit on it. After a couple minutes she finally did it but she was real but hurt after so I gave her a good rub down.

Day 47: 3 Shot scene

The only real reason I am still interested in college are classes like Lighting 112: Lighting for the Moving Image. For this class we had to light a scene that had only a master, two shot, and close up. We decided to shoot a scene in which a man is strangled and had to light it appropriately. Funny thing about lighting is that it takes a bunch of lights to make a scene dark.

Some other students were assigned to shoot a proper interview lighting setup.

I ended up being the strangler and think I did a decent job. I've watched Dexter a couple times so I thought I was qualified.

I will definitely be taking my camera to this class form now on.
